Sharon Van Etten’s name had been floating on the periphery of my awareness for a while, when I finally wised up and downloaded her latest EP from emusic (using my friend AMA’s account. Thanks! Hope Mexico is fun!). It’s quickly become part of my heavy rotation.
I missed her Portland show last Friday with Junip, even after learning that her bass player and I went to high school together. But I’ve been forcing everyone who gets in the car with me or comes over to listen to this stellar EP.
This little woman has a big, arresting voice that’s part Cat Power, part Beth Orton with a retro sort of throw-back element that leaves me feeling like I’ve heard these songs before –when really, they’re just sort of timeless and great.
Check her out at her website, grab the EP here or here (I’d skip the last LP), or check out the NPR Tiny Desk concert here for a preview.

The hit, Save Yourself. I loved it from Tiny Desk. And now even my son likes it. And I thought you were wonderful from even older stuff. When you were making new. I am not too sure about the Nashville ver, though. It is lovely and slick, (the doubling is nice and I like the huskier voice) but… there was just something about the original. Production is first rate, artistry somewhere else. I am older than I feel.
Be well.
