The Cave Singers are one of my favorite discoveries of the last few years. I can’t better describe this Seattle group than their Matador Records bio does, so here’s some stolen narrative for you:
“Here is the mystery of Seattle’s Cave Singers. They never listened to much folk music, they never intended to play folk music, and more importantly, their guitarist never picked up the instrument until recently. Yet, this strange trio is writing and performing some of the most hypnotizing folk music we have today.”
They are very much in the same vein as The Builders and The Butchers, and I find myself reaching for the same adjectives to use here – infectious, foot-stomping…you get the picture. Their 2007 Invitation Songs was on heavy rotation in my car last year, and still hasn’t grown tired. In my opinion, it’s a better effort than this year’s Welcome Joy, which will probably still land in my top 15 or so.
I don’t have any first-person testimonial for you since their recent Portland gig was canceled and rescheduled for late December, so stay tuned and check out these tracks in the meantime.

Great discovery. I’m hooked on them, and have only listened to a grand total of about three whole songs of theirs. There’ll be more though.
Whisky eh? I can respect that in a woman. It’s one of my regular drinks.
Cheers from Texas
