Midlake, The Courage of Others, February 2
Midlake’s 2006 Album, The Trials of VanOccupanther, has been a favorite of mine for a couple years now. This is a 21st Century Texas band channeling Fleetwood Mac, singing about things that happened in 1893 and keeping it all highly listenable.
Live in Portland, March 6th, Wonder Ballroom
You can stream the whole album right now at NPR Music
Frightened Rabbit, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, March 1
These guys put out one my top three albums of 2008, The Midnight Organ Fight, and put on a great live set at last year’s MusicFest NW, providing an excellent backdrop to a certain amount of sweatiness, drunkenness and ex-boyfriend drama. (See blurry photo.)
Also, nice album title. I will take it to heart.
They will be in Portland May 17th at Berbati’s.
Frightened Rabbit: Swim Until You Can’t See Land
Kasey Anderson, Nowhere Nights, February 16th.
Everything you need to know is here, here and here.
Live in Portland Feb.25 and March 27.
Drive By Truckers, The Big To-Do, March 16
If you’re anything like me, you’re going to want to keep your expectations in check for this one. It just hasn’t been the same since Isbell left the band. That said, this is my favorite of the last three they’ve put out.
It doesn’t look like the will be in Portland in the foreseeable future. I’ll survive.
Drive-By Truckers: This Fucking Job
The Tallest Man on Earth, The Wild Hunt, April 13
One of my favorite albums of last year that was actually from 2008. Swedish loveliness.

funny. glad to know someone else hears the fleetwood mac in midlake. that pounding piano ‘roscoe’ – kills me every time. love the new one and can’t wait for the show!
