Required Listening: Lissie

Here’s the thing — I don’t want to like Lissie. Maybe it’s because her songs are a bit too palatable and a few tracks on her EP are a bit too predictable. But most likely it’s because she’s unbearably pretty and talented and probably 23.

Lissie is an LA-based artist who looks (and to a lesser degree sounds) like she was somehow dropped, barefoot, from Laurel Canyon circa 1970 into the year 2010. In November 2009, she released her first EP, Why You Runnin’, which feature soaring, haunting vocals, country-folk stylings and a touch of foot-stomping blues and soul. The opening track, “Little Lovin’” is a breakup song for the eternally optimistic, and a song that you’d have to be dead not to enjoy on some level. Within the first two lines of the song, she mentions Appalachia, farming, the Mississippi River and moonshine. This is exactly what makes her music at once attractive and a bit…formulaic. I feel a little like I’m being manipulated, and dammit, it’s working.

You can buy her EP on iTunes or at emusic. Check out her Daytrotter session here.
